Writing Calculators

Page counts, syllables, reading level and reading time, with the assumptions shown.

What these tools do

These are free calculators and text analyzers for writers. They answer the practical questions that come up while you draft: how long a piece is, how hard it is to read, how many syllables a line holds, and how long a reader needs to finish it. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you paste is uploaded.

Planning length. The words-to-pages converter turns a word count into pages for your font, spacing and margins, and the guide to how many words are in a novel compares your draft with cited ranges by genre. Checking your text. The readability checker scores reading level with six standard formulas, and the reading time calculator estimates how long a text or a book takes to read. Poetry and lyrics. The syllable counter counts word by word and line by line, and the haiku checker tests three lines against 5-7-5.

Where a tool gives an estimate, it says so and shows the assumptions behind it, so you can decide how far to trust it.

These tools are being built in order. Each card switches on as soon as it ships.
