About Writer by Nature

Last updated: October 18, 2026

Writer by Nature is a set of free tools and guides for people who write: name generators, a library of writing and journal prompts, plot and title generators, and calculators for pages, word counts, readability and reading time.

Why it exists

Writers need small, quick helpers: a name that fits a character, a page count for a draft, a prompt on a blank-page day. We build them to be fast, free to use and honest about how they work.

How the tools work

Every tool runs in your browser. Text you paste into an analyzer is not uploaded to our servers and is not stored by us. Favorites you save stay on your device. The tools themselves are rule-based and data-based; no AI runs when you use them.

Accuracy and corrections

Counts of syllables, pages, readability and reading time are estimates, and each page explains how it is calculated. We cite sources for the facts we state and leave out what we can’t verify. Found a mistake? Email hello@writerbynature.com with the page address.

How we build it

We use AI tools to help build the site and draft content. Factual claims are tied to cited sources, and anything we couldn’t verify is left out.

Who runs it

Writer by Nature is operated by farwear LLC, a limited liability company registered in Wyoming, United States.

Data sources

  • Surnames: US Census Bureau, Frequently Occurring Surnames from the 2010 Census. We use the top 5,000 names and their counts only. Public-domain US government data.
  • First names: US Social Security Administration, national baby names. We use the most common names per recorded sex and per decade of birth. Public-domain US government data.
  • Syllable counts: our rule-based estimate is checked against the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (Carnegie Mellon University). We keep only the words where the two disagree, with the dictionary’s counts.
  • Word counts of novels: counted from public-domain texts on Project Gutenberg. Only the counts are stored, not the texts.
  • Reading speeds: Brysbaert (2019), “How many words do we read per minute?”, Journal of Memory and Language.
  • Everything else: fantasy and villain syllable tables, epithets, house names, and the writing and journal prompts, plot and title lists, and all page text are original to this site.
